East Alabama Medical Center

Need:

Facing a fast-approaching audit by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) needed to quickly implement a job analysis that would establish new behavior-based competencies for use in job descriptions, performance appraisals, and selection.

Solution:

Using DDI's Identifying Criteria for Success® (ICS®), EAMC quickly placed all of its 300-plus jobs into eight families. EAMC then used the ICS competency modeling software to perform analyses that identified specific competencies and produced behavior-based interview guides for each job family. After establishing the new competencies, EAMC implemented Targeted Selection® (TS®), DDI's behavior-based interviewing system. Initially, the center planned to use TS® for nurses only but decided to expand its use to all job families. DDI certified three EAMC employees as TS® administrators and EAMC then trained its 112 managers, including the CEO, in TS®.

Results:

According to Ken Lott, Vice President of Operation for EAMC, "Targeted Selection® has exceeded our expectations. We're making better and more detailed decisions." What's more, a recent employee survey revealed that 72 percent of the workforce would like to retire at EAMC—a statistic revealing an unprecedented level of employee satisfaction.
