Erik Duerring

Director, Consulting Services (Asia)

Erik Duerring is Director of Consulting Services in Asia for Development Dimensions International (DDI). He has over 13 years of experience in the areas of succession management, assessment, and leadership development, covering various industries, such as hi-tech, pharmaceutical, financial, consumer goods, manufacturing, sales and services. He has worked with DDI’s Asia operations offering project management, consulting, and sales support since 2002. He has been based in Shanghai since 2005 primarily providing leadership to DDI’s Asia consulting, assessment and executive solution operations.

Current Responsibilities

Erik  supports DDI’s clients in Asia as well as globally for all consultant and delivery engagements. Across 7 locations he has a unique team of over 75 consultants, executive coaches, project managers, trainers, instructional designers, and support resources. He is responsible for:

  • Formulating and executing DDI Asia consulting business strategies.
  • Leading and developing a team of consulting associates who design and deliver solutions in the areas of selection, development, performance management, senior executive assessment, succession management, and change management.
  • Ensuring that clients get measurable results from DDI’s responsive, high-quality consulting and delivery associates.
  • Educating HR professionals and business line managers on the strategic value of talent management components such as identifying leadership potential, assessment, selection and executive development programs.

Education and Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Washington and Jefferson College
  • Currently working toward a master’s degree in business from Duquesne University
  • Since 2005 he has been an active member in AMCHAM – Shanghai.
  • Member, Society for Human Resource Management, where he has been certified as a Professional in Human Resources since 1999

Key Capabilities and Experience

Erik has consulted in the U.S., Asia, Africa, and Europe with multi-national organizations such as Microsoft, DuPont, OMRON, Texas Instruments, TSMC, Eaton, Citigroup, Volkswagen, Toyota, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, and the United Nations. The following highlights several examples of his experience in Asia:

  • Launched Mainland China’s first physical assessment center in 2006.
  • Designed and managed a comprehensive talent management program (including assessment, coaching, development planning, and executive development program) with the purpose of building up DuPont China’s local leadership bench. The program has resulted in successful upward deployments and 100% retention of the local leadership team.
  • At PTT, a leading Fortune 200 company in Thailand, Erik consults with CEO and his senior team to design and implement strategic talent initiatives, including organizational talent strategy, succession management, executive assessment and development.
  • Designed and managed a two-week action learning program for Eaton’s Asia Pacific hi-potential leaders. The program gives operational leaders the opportunity to understand and experience the 9 roles of strategic leaders. The program has been the highest rated in Eaton AP University for past three years.
  • In two weeks led a team to design and implement a state-of-the-art, assessment process, enabling Skoda/Shanghai Volkswagen throughout Mainland China to assess, select, onboard, and train 80 dealership GMs and Sales Directors within six weeks.
  • Developed and implemented an assessment and feedback process to measure and develop participant’s competence for senior roles within Microsoft Greater China Region.
  • Designed interview tools (as well as conducted interviews) for evaluating business leaders as part of the judging process for CNBC’s Asia Business Leaders Award.

Mr. Duerring is co-author of the recent book, Leadership Success in China: An Expatriate’s Guide. In addition he has authored several articles on talent management and he is frequently sought after for industry presentations and quotes.
