BP America's Story
Featuring Paul Gross, Director of Competence Assurance, BP America, on fostering a culture focused on safety.
BP wants to drive safety and operational risk management into the heart of the company. To do this, personnel in safety-critical roles needed to have top-notch competence in relevant areas. Gross and his team developed a "competence assurance framework" to identify the roles that are safety-critical, and define the technical and behavioral safety-critical competencies for those roles. Next, assessment is used to measure those in safety-critical roles against the necessary competencies and followed up with development if needed.
"I think the idea behind this is to be really broad and think about safety from all angles," says Gross." Specifically around assessment, [we've tried] to raise our game around the rigor and the quality of the tools and the way we approach our assessment process."
