During its seven decades in business Pacific Seafood has grown from being a small retail seafood shop in Portland, Ore., to the Western Hemisphere’s largest vertically integrated seafood company. This growth has been a big part of the Pacific Seafood story, but just as important is the organization’s culture, which is guided by its Diamond Philosophy—Teamwork, Quality, Productivity, and Excellence—that embodies the organization’s ideals and business practices.
Living the Diamond Philosophy every day, however, is an ongoing challenge for multiple reasons as the organization operates facilities stretching from Alaska to Mexico and into the Western and Southwestern U.S. Pacific Seafood needed a unique approach to training that would fit the organization’s structure, business, and fast-paced work environment.
Pacific Seafood formulated a two-pronged training strategy. This strategy included the development and launch of Pacific Seafood University, which involves a robust e-learning curriculum that provides team members at all organizational levels with access to a wide range of brief courses covering job and organization-specific topics, such as product information and company operations.
In addition, to address the development needs of the organization’s leaders—the backbone of Pacific Seafood’s culture—it embarked on a highly targeted rollout of various courses from DDI’s Interaction Management®: Exceptional Leaders . . . Extraordinary Results® leadership development system and Techniques for a High-Performance Workforce® development system for leaders and team members. These courses include Essentials of Leadership, Resolving Conflict, Achieving Your Leadership Potential, Personal Empowerment: Taking Initiative, and Communicating and Listening, among others.
“We have a more professional environment, more accountability,” says Joe Ohalloran, general manager of the Clackamas, Ore., distribution center.
In addition, the training has helped Pacific Seafood reduce turnover, attract higher-quality new team members, and reduce stress on leaders and improve their quality of life.
