The Most Important Leadership Blog of 2017?

by Craig Irons

As 2017 ends, we at DDI have taken stock of which blogs—among the 63 we published over the past 12 months—were the most read.

It’s useful to identify our top blogs for the year, so we’ll know the topics and formats to produce more of in the year to come. But an accounting of our most popular blogs also tells us something more valuable.

It reveals what challenges you, our readers, are struggling with, what your priorities are, and the areas where you feel like you need more information, guidance, or advice. Of course, we know that some blogs prove popular just because they are entertaining, well-written, or fun. This is as it should be.

But we also recognize you’re busy, and you’re only going to take time to read a blog if doing so will be time well spent.

So, without further ado, let’s look at the top blogs we published on Leader Pulse (previously titled Talent Management Intelligence) in 2017.

10 Hot Leadership Topics for 2017
Posted: 06 Jan, 2017, by Stephanie Neal
Our most-read blog of the year was also the first one we published back in January: a look ahead to the leadership topics that would command your attention in the year ahead. And, yes, we will be publishing a 10 Hot Leadership Topics for 2018 blog. You can look for it the first week of January.

Leadership & Learning: Keeping the Beat
Posted: 09 Mar, 2017, by Bill Hester
Bill Hester’s personal story about the similarities between developing leadership skills and learning to play the drums struck a chord—or perhaps it was a beat—with readers. You may not have missed a beat this year, but if you missed this blog, I recommend you go back and give it a look!

10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Become a Leader
Posted: 16 Jun, 2017, by Tacy Byham, Ph.D.
Tacy Byham, DDI’s CEO, is the only author who penned two of our 10 top blogs. In this one from June, she acknowledged one of the often-unspoken realities of leadership: that many people are motivated to become leaders for the wrong reasons.

If you manage people who have leadership aspirations, this blog describes questions you’ll want to take up with them. And if you aren’t a leader now but think you might want to become one, answering these 10 questions is a must before you throw your hat in the ring.

5 Reasons Why Your High-Potential Program Isn’t Working
Posted: 19 Oct, 2017, by Mark Busine
You’ll hear a lot more from DDI in 2018 about the critical topic of leadership potential. This blog, from Mark Busine, co-author of a popular eBook we published this year, raises important considerations about the value of, and over-reliance on, high-potential programs.

Why Gamble with Your Leadership Development Investment?
Posted: 29 Aug, 2017, by Janice Burns
While manager support is critical to the success of a leadership development initiative, it also continues to be a challenge for many organizations. It’s no surprise, then, that this blog from Janice Burns drew a lot of attention.

What Research Says About Getting the Most from Your Leadership Pipeline
Posted: 14 Sep, 2017, by Evan Sinar, Ph.D.
In 2017 we published the first piece of research based on DDI’s Leadership Databank. It was titled Leadership Practices: What’s Proven. What’s “Worth Less.” Evan Sinar, our chief scientist and a co-author of the research, contributed this blog revealing which practices related to leadership pipelines are proven by research—and which aren’t.

Why High Performers Often Make Lousy Leaders
Posted: 28 Apr, 2017, by Tom Skiba, Ph.D.
One of the great mysteries in most organizations is why so many high performers, when promoted into leadership positions, struggle so mightily to adapt to their new roles. This insightful blog from Tom Skiba explains why this phenomenon isn’t really a mystery at all.

Why Every Company Needs a Leadership Strategy
Posted: 21 Feb, 2017, by Bruce Court
Leadership strategy was a big topic in 2017. And Bruce Court explained why: While organizations typically have defined business and cultural strategies, they often lack a cohesive leadership strategy. If you need to help formulate one in your organization, Bruce’s blog is a helpful primer.

#LeadLikeAGirl: Ignite Your Impact as a Leader!
Posted: 27 Feb, 2017, by Tacy Byham, Ph.D.
There was a seemingly endless procession of stories in the media this year about men in leadership positions behaving badly, especially toward women. We’re happy to point out that gender diversity was a recurring theme in the content DDI published throughout the year, including this blog, this blog, this research, and this Think Piece.

One of the most impactful pieces was this blog from Tacy Byham that we ran in February, in advance of International Women’s Day 2017. Her message, which grew more resonant as the year unfolded, is a simple yet important one: Diversity in the leadership ranks isn’t a women’s issue—it’s a business issue.

Lessons from 25 Years of CEO Coaching
Posted: 24 May, 2017, by Bob Rogers
Bob Rogers, DDI’s president emeritus, has long been a go-to coach for CEOs and those moving into critical C-level roles. As such, he has a great perspective on what separates successful CEO candidates from the rest. He distilled some of his observations on this subject in this interesting blog.

So, what’s next?

In 2018, for the Leader Pulse blog we have planned a full slate of new research, insights, useful information, and inspiration to help you do your job better.

Buckle up. It’s going to be a busy year!

Until then, Happy Holidays, and best wishes from all of us at DDI for a joyful, healthy, and successful 2018!
