Coaching will always be a critical component of effective leadership and good performance management.

At the strategic level, performance management enables your company to execute on its business strategy by creating alignment of priorities up and down the organization and accountability toward these goals.

Part of the challenge is that most leaders pencil it in as an annual event when it should be part of a larger cycle of performance management activities that take place all year long.
  • Through their daily interactions, leaders must communicate effectively and inspire their people to “give their all” so your organization can accomplish its goals.
  • With effective coaching, leaders will encourage people to take ownership of, and be accountable for, their own work performance. New leaders who are able to master the basics—identifying the coaching need, following through with coaching and support, and measuring results—will be more effective in driving performance and productivity.
  • Individual performance is managed on an ongoing basis through coaching and feedback, while working within the organization’s time parameters for goal setting and performance reviews.
By breaking up the performance management conversations into small, lighter-weight but meaningful chunks throughout the year, the review at the end isn’t something that leaders and direct reports end up dreading. Instead, it becomes an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments.
