[Benchmark Yourself] Is Your Talent Strategy Built for a VUCA World?

This is part 2 of a series on talent management in a VUCA world.

“As a leader in talent management, you have undoubtedly already noticed over the last decade that there has been continuous volatility and change in the business, political, social, technological, and even the physical environment. Well, this world of turmoil actually has a name, which is VUCA—an acronym for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity." Excerpt from a recent post by Dr. John Sullivan

A Framework for VUCA Readiness

It’s all well and good to discuss the dynamics of VUCA in a theoretical sense. But organizations must get the talent equation right in practice. HR leaders need to identify gaps and weaknesses in their talent systems while simultaneously understanding what success looks like. That way, practical decisions can be made about priorities within a limited-resource environment.  What if there was a tool that helped HR leaders define and assess their talent practices against the VUCA dynamics and come out with a clear focus for moving forward?  We have created such a tool.

[Benchmark] Your organization’s ability to perform in the VUCA world.

Crafting the Benchmark

VUCA: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and AmbiguityDeveloped through in-depth discussion with experts in selection, leadership development, and succession, the benchmarking tool sets out to define agile talent management. Ultimately, our objective was to distill these concepts into actionable practices that could prepare organizations to capitalize on the opportunities present in the VUCA environment.

Boiling it Down

Savvy HR leaders know that their current talent processes will become obsolete, and design agility and adaptation into their systems, proactively addressing the unknown. They recognize talent management systems and processes must be integrated, purposeful, and agile. They understand that their organization must select and develop leadership capability for unknown, yet certain, change. They also understand learning tension and discomfort have to be institutionalized as a means for leadership acceleration. They can build their understanding of all these elements from an assessment of the external environment.

[Benchmark] Your organization’s ability to perform in the VUCA world.

Worth consideration—evolution favors adaptation. In today’s environment, your organization must be designed for exceptionally fast, multidimensional adaptation or risk extinction. Your competitors are facing a similar environment and there will certainly be winners and losers. Winners will find themselves among the companies with the organizational capability of adaptation. Losers simply won’t find themselves at all.
